About

Filmmaker Rafael Manuel plumbs the depths of Filipino identity and national consciousness in his original drama that earned a Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Set entirely on a golf course, a microcosm of the Philippines according to Manuel, the film follows Isabel and other young women who are hospitality workers, detailing class disparities, misogyny, and post-colonial power structures in ways that are profoundly unsettling. The New Yorker called the film "a masterwork [that] opens new vistas in the history of cinema." Filipiñana is the official submission of the Philippines to the 99th Academy Awards (2027) in the International Feature category. Screened as part of Filipino American History Month. Tickets: $9 general admission; $7 for MFAH members, students with ID, and seniors (65+). This screening takes place in Lynn Wyatt Theater in the Kinder Building.
