About

Join Architecture Center Houston for the opening reception of Big Dome, Bigger Dreams: Visions for Harris County Domed Stadium, a new exhibition exploring the history, architectural significance, and possible future of Houston's iconic Astrodome. When the Harris County Domed Stadium opened in 1965, it was proclaimed the Eighth Wonder of the World. The exhibition traces the Dome's development, groundbreaking architectural and engineering achievements, historic events, decline, and decades of proposals for its reuse. Through archival material, imagery, and a timeline of the Dome's development and life, visitors can explore the story of one of Houston's most recognizable landmarks and consider the architectural, environmental, cultural, and financial questions surrounding its future. The exhibition also features proposals for the future of the Astrodome developed by University of Houston students, connecting Houston's architectural history with ideas for what the landmark could become next. The Astrodome has been the site of historic moments in sports, entertainment, politics, and Houston history. Big Dome, Bigger Dreams invites visitors to look beyond the Dome as a relic of the past and consider the possibilities for its next chapter. The opening reception will take place Thursday, October 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Architecture Center Houston in downtown Houston. The exhibition will remain on view through January 22, 2027. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public. PHOTO: Harris County Domed Stadium, October 15, 1963, Courtesy of George Kirksey Papers.
