About
“Waves of Hearts Beating Drums” is a solo exhibition by Mariposa Tejada composed of sculptural forms made from clay, recycled wood, plant life, and water. Tejada invites the viewer to listen to the waters, to reflect on interconnected histories, honor collective resilience, reimagine how we gather, learn and move together, and to remember the freedom that pulses just beneath the surface. A journey through Afro-Indigenous memory, at the center, Waves of Hearts Beating Drums is the canoe, plant ancestors, Afro-Spirituality and symbols of carnival, emblems of resistance, migration, and ancestral memory. The canoe is both symbol and structure: it speaks of freedom, maritime maroonage, harsh migrations, and sacred connectivity between waterways, islands, and peoples. It represents bodies in motion, stories in motion. Opening October 9th, 6-9 pm, artist talk at 7 pm. Programming schedule: October 9th, 6-9 pm, artist talk at 7 pm. October 23rd, 7-9 pm: Screening of Sugar Island by Director Johanné Gómez Terrero. October 29th, 5-9 pm: Waves of Hearts Beating Drums Special Gallery Hours and Poetry Open Mic.
