About
Looking for a new art experience? Art Encounters programs, led by artists and inspired by art at the MFAH, focus on creating community. The way you participate is up to you. Take an active role, or simply observe. Open to all ages. Supplies are provided. On October 29, 2026, this Art Encounters program, led by artist Jordan Lumpkins and inspired by works on view in American Modernism from the Charles Butt Collection, invites you to experiment with multidimensional art. Work in a communal setting to create a mixed media painting on a textured canvas. This program is included with Museum admission. Meet on the Lower Level of the Kinder Building. About the artist: Jordan "J Lū" Lumpkins is a Houston-based mixed media artist whose work excavates the layers of identity formation among young Black males through the meticulous construction of textured, material-rich paintings. Selected as one of four American artists for the UNESCO RésilientArt residency in Luanda, Angola, and formerly appointed Fall 2025 Artist-in-Residence at Houston Hobby Airport, his work resides in the permanent collections of the City of Houston and Newark City Hall. A 2025 SACI grant awardee and collaborator with Houston Arts Alliance through the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs, J Lū's practice extends beyond the canvas through curatorial work with institutions including Project Row Houses.
